Finalists shown next Saturday By Eileen Duffy The East End's first student film festival has signed on some notable names as judges: a film/theater critic, a television producer and a comedy writer. The 2006 East End Student Film Project has accepted between 20 and 25 applications from high school and college students. These films, which have a maximum length of 20 minutes, will be seen and reviewed by Jeffrey Lyons, Bob Markell and Tom Leopold. Mr. Lyons is the critic for WNBC-TV (Channel 4) and the co-host, with Allison Bailes, of "Reel Talk," a nationally syndicated television show that covers new-release movies. Mr. Lyons and his family have homes in New York City and Orient. Mr. Markell, a resident of Shelter Island, is an art director and producer whose career began in television's golden age, when he produced "Playhouse 90" and was the art director of "You Are There" with Edward R. Morrow. He has received Emmys, the Hollywood Foreign Press Award and several Screen Producers Guild awards. Mr. Leopold has written, produced and consulted for such television shows as "Seinfeld," "Cheers" and "Hope and Faith." He has recently returned from England, where he was executive producer on "My Family" for the BBC. The author of two critically acclaimed novels, Mr. Leopold and his family divide their time between New York City and Greenport. The winner of the East End Student Film Project will receive a $500 gift certificate to B & amp;H photo in New York City. Second prize is a $250 certificate and the third-place winner will take home a $125 gift certificate. The films by the finalists, who will be announced in the Sept. 28 issue of The Suffolk Times, are going to be shown at the Greenport Movie Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 30. The screening, which starts at 8 p.m., is open to the public and admission is free. A reception with refreshments from The Market and D'Latte will follow the films. This contest is a kick-off to the Student Film Project, which aims to provide a space, equipment and professional mentors for young local filmmakers. The project is sponsored by Tax Reduction Services and Times/Review Newspapers.
