Student films to debut Sept. 29

By Eileen Duffy

The second annual East End Student Film Project has announced the lineup of judges for 2007.

The festival is open to high school and college-age students residing or summering in the towns of Southold, Riverhead, East Hampton, Southampton and Shelter Island.

The judges are Michael Edelson, John D. Williams Jr., Tom Leopold, Thomas DeWolfe, Herb Scannell and Joe Lauro

Mr. Edelson has been working since 1957 with a variety of media and art: film, photography, journalism, and education. For a quarter-century he was a professor of the art department at Stony Brook University. Most recently he is working as director and writer on the documentary film "The Vermeer Man" about Han van Meegeren, the greatest art forger of the 20th century.

Mr. Williams is perhaps best known as executive director of the National Scrabble Association; he was featured in WORD WARS, a documentary shown at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. He has also worked for 20 years as a writer/producer for television and film -- Nickelodeon, Spike Television, TV Land and ESPN, among others. John has also written numerous screenplays, the most recent purchased by Paramount.

Mr. Leopold has written on such shows as Seinfeld and Cheers. He recently returned from London where he wrote and executive produced "My Family" for the BBC and is currently preparing two comedies for British television. He is the author of the musical (co-written with Harry Shearer) "J.Edgar!" Mr. Leopold is the author of the novels "Almost Like Being Here" and "Somebody Sing." His latest novel "Milt & amp; Marty, The Story Of The Longest Lasting Least Successful Comedy Writing Duo In Show Business History" will be published this April by Virgin Books.

Mr. DeWolfe is a retired producer of mainstream television movies and independent films. Since moving to Greenport in 2001, he has been associated with a number of theater projects including three seasons with Shakespeare in the Park. He is chairman of the Greenport Music Festival, a program bringing classical music to the Greenport School.

Mr. Scannell is CEO of Next New Networks, a media company that creates "micro" television networks on the Internet for targeted communities. He previously worked for Viacom for more than 15 years, most recently as president of Nickelodeon Networks and vice chairman of MTV Networks. Herb was an executive at Showtime before joining Viacom.

Mr. Lauro, a filmmaker, owns the Greenport-based Historic Films Archive. He was the musical director for the Academy Award-winning documentary "The Ten Year Lunch," and has worked as musical consultant, director or associate producer on numerous other documentary projects. He holds a master's degree in cinema from New York University.

Last year 20 students submitted films, and this year organizers expect 30. Nearly 300 people attended the screening. This year's awards will be announced and screened at the film festival on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Greenport Movie Theatre, with screenings of the student finalist submissions set to begin at 7 p.m. with additional screenings to be announced.

The festival is sponsored by the Greenport Movie Theatre, Hudson City Savings Bank, Cablevision, Times/Review Newspapers, and Tax Reduction Services.
