Help victims of violence If you have a land-line phone and a serious interest in helping victims of domestic violence, your help is needed to staff a 24-hour hotline offering crisis intervention, counseling, referrals and information and shelter screening. The Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence provides intensive training for volunteers, who are expected to commit to four weekend or evening hours per week for six months. Helping women and girls Peconic Bay Zonta is looking for new members who are interested in advocating and providing service for women and girls. Part of Zonta International, it seeks to advance the status of women locally and worldwide. Its activities include preparing a harvest meal for Maureen's Haven, a homeless outreach program on the North Fork, supporting the Lunch Box Kids program in the Hamptons, and contributing to other initiatives. Zonta means "honest and trustworthy" in the Lakota Sioux language. Teen bereavement camp A four-day camp for teenagers ages 12-14 who have suffered a loss will be offered August 11-14 at Timothy Hill Children's Ranch in Riverhead, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sponsored for a second year by the nonprofit Time for Teens, it will be staffed by licensed professionals and community volunteers. Film project expands to include commercials The East End Student Film Project will add a category for best commercial (including public service announcements) to it annual film festival. To support this category, EESFP will offer a workshop on TV commercials, "Making Every Second Count," from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, July 12 and 26 and Aug. 2. The class will be taught by Lance Jensen of the Boston-based advertising company Modernista! Participants (grade nine through college) will create their own commercials, which they may submit for the festival competition by Aug. 8. Entries are sought for maritime photo contest The Suffolk County Historical Society invites entries for a juried photography competition entitled "Long Island's Maritime Heritage."
